Press release from Electoral Commission of Jamaica:
ECJ
DISTANCES ITSELF FROM MEDIA STATEMENTS SUGGESTING ATTEMPT BY PARLIAMENT TO
DESTROY ECJ
KINGSTON, JAMAICA – October 2, 2013:
The Electoral Commission of
Jamaica (ECJ) having met this morning, distances itself from statements in the
media reportedly made by former Chairman, Dr Herbert Thompson to suggest that there is an attempt by the Parliament of Jamaica to
destroy the Commission.
The ECJ notes and welcomes the
fact that Parliament on the 24th September 2013 approved the Report
on Campaign Financing and referred the matter to Cabinet for drafting
instructions to be issued to the Chief Parliamentary Counsel and then back to
Parliament for passage.
The members of the ECJ are in
agreement with the following resolution from the Minutes of the Honourable
House of Representatives:
“BE IT RESOLVED that the
Electoral Commission of Jamaica Report on Campaign Financing (Revised
recommendations of the Electoral Commission after consideration of the comments
and opinions of Members of the House of Representatives and Senate as expressed
in debate) dated August 2013, which was laid on the Table of the House on the
10th, day of September, 2013 be adopted.”
