JAMAICA MILITARY BAND MARCHES INTO TORONTO AUGUST 15

TORONTO, ON (July 26, 2012) – In celebration of Jamaica's 50th Anniversary of Independence, the Jamaica Military Band (JMB) will perform at two venues on August 15: Nathan Phillips Square and BMO Field. The Consulate General of Jamaica, in partnership with the Jamaica Tourist Board and the Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), is presenting this special visit to Canada with stops in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa.
The Jamaica Military Band is the oldest continuous-service unit in the Jamaica Defence Force with over 80 years in service. Their musicianship, together with their precision and impressive uniforms, captures the pride and spirit of the island.

 Jessica Ennis was crowned Olympic heptathlon champion in front of an adoring home crowd, as a new British record carried her to gold.

In one of the iconic moments of the London Games, the woman long anointed as the face of the Games fulfilled her destiny with a series of brilliant personal bests that left her rivals helpless.
Ennis knew she was almost certain of the title going into Saturday evening's final event, and she delivered with two minutes 8.65secs in the 800m.
The 26-year-old's total of 6,955 points was a huge 306 points ahead of Germany's Lilli Schwarzkopf in silver and 327 clear of world champion Tatyana Chernova in bronze.
"I honestly can't believe it after all the hard work and after the disappointment in Beijing 2008," said Ennis.

... She will go down in British sporting history with this result, and her smiles of disbelief and joy after crossing the line were mirrored around the heaving stands of the Olympic Stadium.

LONDON, England — She thought her win four years in Beijing, China was sweeter as she was an unknown and inexperienced then, but you couldn't tell as she fell to the track in shock and surprise after her win in the women's 100m was confirmed on the big scoreboard inside Olympic Stadium last night.

In front of a packed stadium with capacity 80,000 spectators on a cool night perfect for sprinting, Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Veronica Campbell Brown provided Jamaica's first two medals — gold and bronze at the XXX Olympiad in London to get the medal hunt underway and jump into third place, on the athletics table and 28th overall, tied with Ethiopia behind leaders Great Britain with three gold medals and the People's Republic of China with a gold and two bronze.

LONDON, England:

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce lying on the track, hands cupped over her face after an Olympic 100m final. We have seen this before, but this time around, with Beijing now an ever-fading memory, it was the capacity crowd inside London's Olympic Stadium that was jumping wildly for the little Jamaican.

Like she did as an unknown four years ago, Fraser-Pryce struck gold in the 100m at the London Olympic Games, clocking a blistering 10.75, to lead silver medallist Carmelita Jeter, 10.78, and compatriot Veronica Campbell-Brown, 10.81, to the line, as Jamaica secured its first two medals at the games.
"Yes, the track is fast," Fraser-Pryce laughed, before sharing her simple but effective strategy - get out of the blocks first, and stay in front.
