Jamaica's National Road Safety Council plans Royal 20th Anniv Celebs

NRSC TO HOST HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCE MICHAEL OF KENT AS PART OF ITS 20^th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

Kingston, Jamaica – March 15, 2013: The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) is to host a private visit of His Royal Highness Prince Michael Of Kent, a member of the British Royal family, Royal Patron for the Commission for Global Road Safety and Patron of the non-profit organization, Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).  Both organizations, which have been supported by His Royal Highness, have been providing a leading role in the successful mobilization of the international community in its efforts to reduce road traffic injuries and deaths.

 Dr. Lucien Jones, Vice-Chairman / Convenor, NRSC, announced the Prince's working visit to the island from April 15 to 19 during yesterday's launch of the 20th Anniversary Celebrations of the NRSC at Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. "His Royal Highness is a road safety advocate of international repute and therefore, we are very delighted and quite privileged, to have him accept our invitation to share in this time of celebration with the Council," declared Dr. Jones.

The NRSC Vice Chairman outlined that while in the island, HRH Prince Michael will meet with the Prime Minister and NRSC Chairman Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, Opposition Leader Mr. Andrew Holness and government officials whose portfolio responsibility impact on road safety.  Dr. Jones added, "His Royal Highness will be taken on tours of facilities which promote road safety in the island, visit the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre in Mona and attend a banquet where former Prime Ministers will be honoured. Also, a posthumous award will be conferred on the founder of the Council, Sir John Golding."  The Awards Banquet will take place on Wednesday, April 17

Dr. Jones expressed confidence that the five-day visit of such a high ranking road safety advocate as HRH, will greatly assist  "in the efforts of the NRSC to raise the level of awareness of the importance of road safety for any nation and in particular for a small developing nation like ours." He expects the visit by His Royal Highness to strengthen the bonds of friendship and deepen the relationships which the NRSC has forged with the international community, in this the Decade of Action For Road Safety.

LAUNCH OF NEW NRSC LOGOS & MULTI-MEDIA INITIATIVES

At yesterday's launch ceremony, the NRSC also unveiled its 20^th Anniversary Logo and the BELOW 240 Logo.  The latter is a symbolic representation of the renewed initiative to encourage the reduction in road deaths to fewer than 240 per year.  

 Also introduced to the public for the first time were the new NRSC multi-media initiatives – the NRSC 20^th Anniversary Jingle and Public Education Road Safety Infomercials.

 Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Olympic Gold Medalist, who is the NRSC 'Ambassador'/ Spokesperson for its 20th Anniversary year, is featured in the Infomercials. Composer, Musician/ Entertainer Grub Cooper is the composer of the Jingle. The campaign was produced by PROComm Limited.

 NEW ROAD TRAFFIC ACT TO GO TO PARLIAMENT SOON

In addressing the launch of the NRSC 20^th Anniversary activities, Hon. Dr. Morais Guy, Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing commended the Council on its sterling work in road safety promotion. The Minister credits the Council's road safety strategies, programmes and advocacy for legislative change, for the successful reduction in road fatalities over the years. The Minister further indicated that the SAVE 300Lives Programme resulted in a 24% reduction in road fatalities over the 2008 to 2012 period. He cautioned Jamaicans that while less than 300 lives were lost last year there is no room for complacency, "as still too many lives are being lost."

Acknowledging the pivotal work that the NRSC has played in the review of the Road Traffic Act, Dr. Morais Guy announced that the new Act is at an advanced stage: "The Road Traffic Act is at an advanced stage and will be tabled in the next financial year." 

JAA CHAIRMAN WARNS THAT CRASHES CAN RETARD ECONOMIC GROWTH

Mr. Earl Jarrett,  Chairman, Jamaica Automobile Association reminded participants in the launch ceremony that" every person lost on the nation's roads represents an economic loss, and therefore our road safety programme is as important as an IMF agreement." He contended that crashes will directly and indirectly stymie the country's economic growth and development.

Mr. Jarrett underscored the importance of all citizens paying attention to the efforts to reduce road crashes, especially since road crashes are the second leading cause of deaths in Jamaica, second to homicides. 

Among those who participated in yesterday's NRSC event, chaired by Executive Director Paula Fletcher, were representatives of the Council including the Ministries of Transport, Justice and National Security; Jamaica Constabulary Force, Island Traffic Authority, Transport Authority, and the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association. The media, as well as students from the Mona Heights Primary and Preparatory schools were also in attendance.

New Pope hails from Argentina

Scenes from the announcement of the new Pope of the Roman Catholic Church - the first non-European Pope - Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina is the 266th pontiff. He is the first Jesuit Pope. He took the name Francis for St. Francis of Assissi - the Saint who had received God's message that he should rebuild the Church.

Early life

Jorge Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires, one of the five children of an Italian immigrant railway worker and his wife.^[4] He received a master's degree in chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires, then studied at the seminary in Villa Devoto. He entered the Society of Jesus on 11 March 1958. Bergoglio obtained a licentiate in philosophy from the Colegio Máximo San José in San Miguel, and then taught literature and psychology at the Colegio de la Inmaculada in Santa Fe, and the Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires.^{[citation needed]}

Pre-papal career

He was ordained to the priesthood on 13 December 1969, by Archbishop Ramón José Castellano. He attended the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel, a seminary in San Miguel. Bergoglio attained the position of novice master there and became professor of theology.
Impressed with his leadership skills, the Society of Jesus promoted Bergoglio and he served as provincial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979. He was transferred in 1980 to become the rector of the seminary in San Miguel where he had studied. He served in that capacity until 1986. He completed his doctoral dissertation in Germany and returned to his homeland to serve as confessor and spiritual director in Córdoba.

Bergoglio succeeded Cardinal Quarracino on 28 February 1998. He was concurrently named ordinary for Eastern Catholics in Argentina, who lacked their own prelate. Pope John Paul II summoned the newly named archbishop to the consistory of 21 February 2001 in Vatican City and elevated Bergoglio with the papal honors of a cardinal. He was named to the Cardinal-Priest of Saint Robert Bellarmino.

As cardinal, Bergoglio was appointed to several administrative positions in the Roman Curia. He served on the Congregation of Clergy, Congregation of Divine Worship and Sacraments, Congregation of Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Congregation of Societies of Apostolic Life. Bergoglio became a member of the Commission for Latin America and the Family Council.
As Cardinal, Bergoglio became known for personal humility, doctrinal conservatism and a commitment to social justice. A simple lifestyle contributed to his reputation for humility. He lived in a small apartment, rather than in the palatial bishop's residence. He gave up his chauffeured limousine in favor of public transportation,^[5] and he reportedly cooked his own meals.
On the death of Pope John Paul II, Bergoglio was considered one of the papabile cardinals. He participated as a cardinal elector in the 2005 papal conclave that selected Pope Benedict XVI. It has been reported that Bergoglio was in close contention with Ratzinger during the election, until he made an emotional plea^[6] that the cardinals should not vote for him.^[7] Earlier, he had participated in the funeral of Pope John Paul II and acted as a regent alongside the College of Cardinals, governing the Holy See and the Roman Catholic Church during the interregnum sede vacante period.
During the 2005 Synod of Bishops, he was elected a member of the Post-Synodal council. Catholic journalist John L. Allen, Jr. reported that Bergoglio was a frontrunner in the 2005 Conclave. An unauthorized diary of uncertain authenticity released in September 2005^[8] confirmed that Bergogolio was the runner-up and main challenger of Cardinal Ratzinger at that conclave. The purported diary of the anonymous cardinal claimed Bergoglio received 40 votes in the third ballot, but fell back to 26 at the fourth and decisive ballot.
On 8 November 2005, Bergoglio was elected President of the Argentine Episcopal Conference for a three-year term (2005–2008) by a large majority of the Argentine bishops, which according to reports confirms his local leadership and the international prestige earned by his alleged performance in the conclave. He was reelected on November 11, 2008.


He has affirmed church teaching on homosexuality, including that men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity and that every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided^[13]. He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage, calling it a "real and dire anthropological throwback".^[14] In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote: "Let's not be naive, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God."^[15] He has also insisted that adoption by gay and lesbian people is a form of discrimination against children. This position received a rebuke from Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who said the church's tone was reminiscent of "medieval times and the Inquisition".^[16]

Scenes from the recent groundbreaking for a state-of the-art Cardiac Unit at the Bustamante Hospital for Children in Kingston, Jamaica. Digicel contributed $100 million to this project, announced on the occasion of their 10th Anniversary in 2011.
Sagicor Investments donated the over $40 million raised from their Sigma Run event and Orville 'Shaggy' Burrell's Shaggy Foundation has also been a huge supporter of the Hospital.

CCRP CONDEMNS LOTTO SCAMMING

CCRP IN SOLIDARITY WITH US COUNTERPART AARP IN CAUTIONING SENIORS ABOUT LOTTO SCAM

Kingston, Jamaica, March 11, 2013:  The CCRP (Caribbean Community of Retired Persons) notes with concern that its US counterpart AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) has joined forces with its local authority to warn seniors of the Lotto scam originating from the 876 area code. 

According to Jean Lowrie-Chin, CCRP Founder and CEO, the Caribbean Association is quite alarmed that despite the efforts of the security forces to break this scheme, thousands of senior citizens in the US are still being swindled out of their hard earned savings.

"The CCRP joins in solidarity with our US counterpart and condemns this devious practice which is causing great distress to one of society's most vulnerable groups," Mrs. Lowrie-Chin said, adding: "These culprits are in the minority and certainly do not reflect the morality of our Jamaican people."

CCRP Chair Professor Denise Eldemire said, "We commend the Jamaican Parliament for taking steps to address this issue with the introduction of the Lottery Scam Bill. We urge, however, that this legislation be dealt with expeditiously so that these scammers can be brought to justice quickly."

The Caribbean Community of Retired Persons was launched in April 2010, with the mission of "working to ensure that the vast talent, experience and wisdom of our seniors will be respected, and that they enjoy the quality of life which they so richly deserve."

US Airman Lowrie: Tuition assistance crucial!

Here's the letter I sent to Senator Rubio in regards to tuition assistance. Feel free to use it as a template to send to your representative as well. Our education is important.

Senator Rubio,

I am an active duty airmen enlisted in the Air Force, currently stationed at Randolph Air Force Base, TX. This email is in regards to an email I have received containing links (see below attachments) from a co-worker that states that the Marine Corps will be cutting the Tuition Assistance program for their active duty members. They will need to dip into their G.I. Bill to fund for their education or pay out of pocket. Other services of the Armed Forces may follow suit due to cuts in the DoD budget caused by the sequestration. To take the tuition assistance away from members of the Marine Corps, and potentially other branches, is a travesty and should not be allowed because the education of our military members is crucial to our nation's readiness and economy.

Every day, thousands of military members not only accomplish their primary missions in regards to their duty position, but they are also finishing assignments for higher education classes. Classes that further education, enhance critical thinking, assist with ingenuity, and furthers on the job training. We can all agree that a smarter force is a better one, but cutting this program will severely reduce the incentive for military members to pursue higher education. Further rationale for not cutting the program includes the fact that the current unemployment rate for veterans is 9.4 percent compared to 7.7 percent for civilians. Allowing members to pursue their degree while active will help prepare them for the civilian workforce, give them a better chance to be hired, and further contribute to the economy and the country. Cutting the Tuition Assistance program, a program that military personnel have EARNED through each individual's respective sacrifices, should be avoided.

This is something both sides of the aisle can agree on. I am writing this to ask you and other Florida Senators and Representatives to please talk to leaders in Congress and the Armed Forces in order avert this decision and help our troops better themselves, our military, and most of all, our nation.

Kind Hearts Limited, a non-profit organisation run by young adults, has set its sights on its latest project. Dedicated to giving back to communities within Jamaica, the organisation was started in 2009 with the building of two homes for two needy families in St James. Most recently, the young group got heavily involved with fundraising and the construction of a school in Greenvale, Manchester, in association with Food For The Poor.
After a recent visit to Lluidas Vale, St Catherine, Christina Lechler, the organisation's director, was compelled to assist the students she saw who are currently learning in a cramped room on church grounds. "I visited the community with Hugh Graham, councillor for the Lludias Vale area. He showed me the distinct needs of the community and following the visit, I knew immediately what Kind Hearts next project would be," the young philanthropist told The Gleaner.
The Top Hill Basic School currently serves approximately eight children from the community, but the school directors believe that a new school in better condition and in a more central area would attract some 25 students. Christina added, "The ceiling is water damaged and falling apart. It is too small to comfortably house a classroom environment. It is our hope that if we give these children a better learning environment, they can give back to their own community in immeasurable ways."
As part of its fundraising efforts, Kind Hearts has started the "Party for A Cause" series at the Fiction Nightclub in St Andrew. "The charity's first event was held three weeks ago. We realised our peers are patronising these establishments each weekend, so why not put some of that money towards a great cause?"

Awesome Club Mobay

Reviewed March 5, 2013:Thanks to the advice of our travel agent, my husband and I bought advanced passes to Club Mobay. We are so happy that we did. Once we checked in our luggage we went to Club Mobay's desk and was promptly greeted by the kind staff.

We were then escorted directly to the security check point. Took 3 minutes to go thru security and then we were escorted to Club Mobay.
What a cool place. Beautiful, relaxing area (there are 2 separated areas, one for adults and one for families). Once inside, we were greeted by 3 of the nicest, friendliest, happiest bartenders. They were there to serve the guests and that is exactly what they did. They brought us food, talked with us, laughed with us and made our experience a ton of fun!!
In Club Mobay, there are relaxing chairs, big screen TVs, computer hook-ups, food, non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks. The waitress was very courteous and prompt to see if you would like anything.
The clean, quiet area was a pleasure when having to wait for your departure. Flights are announced, so you know when to go to the boarding gate. Much more comfortable than sitting on the plastic chairs in the boarding area and having to stare at the people across from you.
Well worth the money. We would recommend it to anyone who wants to extend the relaxation of their vacation before heading back home!! : )
