Leaders - be honest but not cruel!

This week's message from Sidjae Robinson Walia ...

Good day leaders,
Being Supportive

"A soft answer turns away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger."  -  Proverbs 15:1

On a recent competitive programme, I watched one team player tear the other apart for everything. Nothing met his lofty standards. As expected, they lost the competition. Throughout the entire event the man criticized his team mate and could only find kind words after they were eliminated. Throughout the event the team mate lamented that nothing she does is ever good enough and maybe he could say 'good job' just once.

All leaders want their team to perform well and to at least meet expectations. Often, when under pressure or when plans derail, leaders say things in anger or frustration that cause more harm than good. Perhaps a few team mates really need to lift their game. Be honest with them but not cruel! Recognize their contribution to the team effort and encourage them to give that extra effort. Be specific about what they could do better and how they could do it better.

How do you react under pressure? Do your team members fear you or do they seek you out for wisdom? Is your 'support' destructive or inspirational?

To Your Unlimited Possibilities,
Sidjae
