BSJ's RESPONSE TO TOILET TISSUE CONCERNS - excerpts of Press Release issued in March 2013

In response to health and safety concerns expressed in a newspaper article regarding substandard toilet tissues being imported and in communication from the Jamaica Customs Department regarding the quality of toilet tissue and paper hand towel imports, the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) intensified its inspection and testing regimes, not only on imports of these products but also products manufactured locally...

To date ten (10) shipments have been detained of which three (3) tested positive for high bacterial load. In this situation the importer will be required to either re-export or destroy the product. Where destruction is selected the BSJ monitors the process. Four (4) shipments have been given full releases due to satisfactory results; testing of the remaining three (3) is still on-going.

The BSJ will continue its comprehensive market survey of these products in its quest to ensure the health and safety of the Jamaican population.
